The girl with the braids

The girl who ran the gift stand today
Was only ten or eleven
She was standing in for her mom
Working with her grandpop...
Asked what kind of day I was having.

She said she'd give me the mask at a discount
She added it all up in her head
And when I was wrong she requoted the price saying
I owed her thirty three US dollars instead!

She had long dark braids
down to her shoulders
Beautiful sparking eyes
Had a dimple in one cheek
Wore a plaid skirt
And seemed (for her age) astonishingly wise.

She looked like she liked helping her grandpa
It looked like he liked it too!
She had such a business savy...
She had a flair for making deals,
What was there left for a gpa to do?

She told me she like math the best
And calculating came so easy
Wondering what one day she'll become
A business woman, a doctor? Maybe she'll teach.....
Too bad I'll probably never see.

I'm just a visitor in San Ignacio today
The stand's so close to the Mayan ruins
And the beautiful smart girl with long black braids
Moves on to her other patrons.
